Innovative Solutions

According to the Ukrainian diabetic federation, there are currently 2.3 million people living with diabetes in Ukaine, with nearly a million unaware of their diagnosis and not even receiving basic medical care. According to WHO statistics, one-third of diabetes patients develop one of the fatal complications during their lifetime (usually within 3-10 years after the onset of the disease) – diabetic retinopathy.

These data were confirmed during the pilot implementation of the CheckEye screening platform in Ukraine during 2022-2023. Screening initially detected retinopathy in 30% of diabetic patients who were previously aware of their diagnosis. Thus, it can be assumed that diabetic retinopathy will develop in approximately 700,000 Ukrainians in the next decade. Untreated retinopathy can lead to irreversible vision loss.

According to global statistics, such cases account for about 10% of all cases of diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, approximately 70,000 Ukrainians may lose their sight in the next 3-10 years due to unsatisfactory management of the problem at the state level. Considering the distribution by age of diabetes patients, it can be assumed that approximately half of these people will be of working age (under 64 years old), which is approximately 35,000 individuals.

CheckEye has developed a cloud-based solution to detect diabetic retinopathy using photographic images of eye fundus through the ML\AI algorithm. Photographs can be taken anywhere – from optic retailers to pharmacies – by non-medical staff to be further uploaded to the system for diagnosis. CheckEye will make early detection of diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy prevention easily accessible for all.
